Congressional Awards

The Congressional Sea Services Award is presented by the National Capital Council of the Navy League to a member of the House or a Senator every year.  The award is presented to a member who has provided outstanding contributions to the Sea Services in the previous calendar year.

The Award is presented at a ceremony and reception in the spring that has historically been attended by members of Congress, staff, flag and general officers, officers and enlisted from the Sea Services and Navy League officers and supporters.

The award is the actual binnacle from the SIOUX FALLS VICTORY that saw action and received a battlestar in the amphibious assault of Okinawa in 1945.  The ship also served in Korea and Vietnam.  The binnacle is a “traveling trophy” that is transported between the House and Senate every year, as the award alternates between being awarded to a member from each chamber.
